Job Overview

As a Principal Ecologist, with the support of the company Director, you’ll lead and deliver a wide range of projects, whilst managing and mentoring more junior members of the team. You’ll play a role in conducting site surveys, producing technical reports, and expanding your expertise into exciting new areas like Biodiversity Net Gain. You’ll also provide technical input into fee quotes, bids and tenders for both public and private sector contracts.

For this role, you may be an established Principal Ecologist or a Senior Ecologist looking to take the next step in your career.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project management, including utilising internal consultants and external sub-contractors to deliver outputs.
  • Supporting clients through all project stages.
  • Undertaking ecological surveys.
  • Quality control/ quality assurance of technical outputs such as ecological reports.
  • Liaising and negotiating with statutory agencies, Local Planning Authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Producing a wide range of technical reports including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments.
  • Technical input into fee quotes, bids and tenders for both public and private sector contracts.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the team.
  • Work with the company Director to recognise and develop opportunities to enhance our ecological service offering.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Relevant degree in Ecology or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of ecology, legislation, and best practice guidelines in England.
  • Membership of appropriate professional body (e.g., CIEEM) or willingness to apply.
  • Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain and Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), or desire to develop skills in these areas.
  • Ability to undertake UKHab Surveys independently and/or holding protected species licence(s).
  • Interest in project management, client liaison, tendering, and business development activities.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.
